CUSTOMERS are going nuts for bars of Cadbury’s Fruit & Nut chocolate.

They are so in demand that supermarkets have been going to extreme lengths amid the shoplifting epidemic.

The Sun recently told how Co-ops in upmarket Cambridge and parts of London – where the chocolate costs £1.80 for a 110g bar – have started locking them in tagged plastic boxes, to stop thieves.

But there are some cheaper alternatives on the market, and Hayley Minn has tested them out – with her search finding one that’s just as good and slightly cheaper.

WHILE Fruit & Nut is expensive in the Co-op, you can actually get a 180g bar from other supermarkets for £2, which makes it slightly cheaper, but not by much.

Taste-wise, I got a lot more delicious chocolate than raisin or nut.

I love Dairy Milk, like most people – but, seeing as this is a fruit and nut test, I had to give it a mark down.

THIS is definitely a lot nuttier than Cadbury, but then I couldn’t taste the chocolate as much, and you want a good balance between both.

Having said that, I really liked it, and if you are more of a fan of nutty-flavoured chocolate, this is a great one to chomp on.

Dark Choc with Raisins & Almonds

180g, £2.20, Waitrose

I’M not a big fan of dark chocolate, so Waitrose was already marked down for not having a milk chocolate option.

But, if you do like it, you’ll love this.

The chocolate was full of rich flavour, and there was a lot of fruit and nut.

Plus it had a delicious cinnamon taste.

But, at £2 for 180g, it’s definitely on the pricier side, so it may be one for when you fancy a bit of luxury.

AS I tore open the wrapper the first thing I noticed about Lidl’s fruit and nut chocolate is how much thinner it is than all the other brands I tried.

So it immediately feels like you’re get as much for your money.

When it comes to flavour, I wasn’t the biggest fan either.

It was far too nutty, with an overwhelming taste of almonds, and the chocolate wasn’t sweet enough.

It just left a bitter taste in my mouth.

WHILE Tesco’s offering is really thick and chunky, it wasn’t sweet enough.

I also found there wasn’t much nut or fruit coming through until after I’d eaten it.

It was OK, but I wasn’t blown away enough to go back for a second helping.

AT first glance, Aldi’s fruit and nut bar looks great, with plenty of almonds coming out of all sides of the chocolate.

However, I think there was actually too much in there, as all I could taste when I ate it, was raisin and nuts.

It was far too fruity for me, and not chocolatey enough.

THE detailing on Asda’s Fruit & Nut chocolate makes it look a lot more expensive than it actually is.

There were also loads of nuts and fruit coming out of the sides, which was a very good sign.

The taste was just as good too, as the chocolate was really smooth and milky, while there was a great balance of fruit and nut.
