HUMANOID robots could change the future of nursing, especially when it comes to elderly care.

That’s according to an expert who’s been working with a team to create a humanoid called Draco 3.

The U.S. Sun took part in a training session demonstration for the Draco 3 robot at the South by Southwest conference in Austin, Texas.

Professor Luis Sentis from the University of Texas, Austin led the session alongside three colleagues.

He revealed his hopes for the robots of the future and how they could assist society.

“Robots becoming nursing support, I think is going to be really important,” he told a small audience.

Sentis stressed that he prefers to focus on “augmentation for people” when it comes to humanoids rather than focus on the negatives.

He stressed that “the ability of robots checking for people at home” will be important.

“I’m saying that from a personal perspective,” he told The U.S. Sun.

“We had relatives living abroad and we had a very hard time checking their health status even if they had nurses 100 percent of the time in the home.

“Just because the nurses would not communicate information.

“Maybe they were worried about many things and us taking flights ten times a year across the ocean to check on our relatives.”

Sentis explained that if humanoid robots were caring for the elderly they could report back their status and how they’re doing to family members.

The professor also explained how humanoids could help around the home.

As well as medicinal help they could provide meals and even dress the humans in their care.

“They need people to check in on them. Sometimes not cooking but sometimes checking their health, or helping them to dress, or just checking the body,” Sentis said of the elderly.

He believes humanoid robots can learn all these skills to assist aging populations.

The expert did admit there are some risks when it comes to humanoids and the chance that they’ll be used for harm.

“I prefer to see robots being used for no harm but harm will happen,” he warned.
