A HUGE pharmacy chain with 2,000 stores has closed down an “essential” franchise – in a “significant loss” for locals.

Boots is closing its branch at Exeter’s Mount Pleasant Centre – along with 12 other stores across the UK.

The chain plans to shut 300 stores in a 12-month bid to “consolidate the business”.

Eight branches have already closed, with 12 more set to shut later this year.

A note on the Mount Pleasant pharmacy’s doors read: “Boots Mount Pleasant Store will close on Saturday, November 18 2023.

“Please discuss your future prescription requirements with a member of the team who will be happy to advise you.

“We have a number of different ways in which we can continue to support you with your ongoing prescription needs.

“Please ask for more details.”

Fuming local Chris Lloyd told DevonLive: “Their expectation is that people will drive to their nearest Boots chemist from local GP surgeries when necessary.

“This is directly counter to Devon County Council’s recent programme of road closures and would add to the increasing congestion on the remaining arterial network.

“Boots’ clientele are, by definition, infirm to some degree, so walking is likely not to be an option and public transport is less than comprehensive.

“We are trying to raise awareness of this further damage caused by capitalisation of an essential element of our health care.”

Writing on Facebook, he added: “Boots are planning to close the Mount Pleasant Pharmacy in November 2023.

“This will be a significant loss to the community, as evidenced by the daily queues outside the door.”

A major fashion retailer with over 150 UK branches has also abruptly shut one of its stores in a high street battle.
