The closure has been confirmed by Costa, who advises locals that they will still have another branch nearby.

A spokesperson told The Sun: “We can confirm that our Costa Coffee store on Bruntsfield Place will close its doors for trade on the 14th of February 2024.

“We apologise for any inconvenience caused.

“Customers can continue to enjoy their favourite Costa coffee at our nearby store on Morningside Road.”

Locals have taken to social media to react to the closure of the coffee shop.

One person said: “God almighty so many businesses losing in Edinburgh, the council needs to fix the rates so this doesn’t keep happening.”

Another added: “Bit of a shame, we like Costa and it’s always busy when we’ve been there.”

While some others were not so disappointed about the closure and saw it as a positive move for other independent coffee shops.

“We have too many coffee chains in this city! Let the independent businesses thrive again”, one added.

While another said: “Means more business for independent cafes.”

Other Costa closures

The coffee chain has already shut the doors on quite a few locations this year.

Costa says that it regularly reviews its store estate across the UK to ensure it is right for its communities and teams.

This could be a combination of closing stores, renovation or the opening of new locations.

The following sites have already closed this year, but a couple will be returning to their local areas.

One of the chain’s shops closed in July but has since reopened further down the road.

The coffee giant closed the doors on its Lowestoft location in July, but this was for a re-vamp.

It is set to open with a whole new look interior and will also have a drive-thru.

If you want to find your nearest Costa branch you can use the store locator tool on its website.

Here are the branches that have previously closed or undergone refurbishment:

  • Coliseum retail park in Ellesmere Port, Cheshire – June 3
  • Welch Way, Witney – June 5
  • Wigan town centre – June 25
  • Five Rise shopping centre, Bingley – July 9
  • High Street, Worcester – July (relocated September 15)
  • Lowestoft’s North Quay retail park – July 23 (refurbishment)
  • Church Street, Oakham – September 15
  • West Bridgford, near Nottingham – September 22
  • Church Street in Malvern, near Worcestershire – November 17

Other store closures and openings

It comes as retailers, banks and restaurants are disappearing from our high streets at an alarming rate.

The cost of living crisishigh inflation and energy costs are all taking their toll on businesses.

Retailers including PoundlandNew Look and Homebase are among those pulling the shutters down on locations for the final time this month.

Many shoppers have taken to doing their shopping online and a lot of households just do not have the spare cash to splash on a shopping spree.

Bank branches are also being affected and just last week banking group Lloyds announced that it would be closing 45 branches next year.

This comes as more banks look to move their services online.

We have a full list of retailers pulling the shutters down on high street premises in December.

However, it is not all doom and gloom for retailers as some are managing to thrive, despite the difficult trading conditions.
