This next-gen device will come equipped with an A14 Bionic processing chip and 5G support.

And for the first time, Apple is also believed to be changing the charging cable for the device to a USB-C.

Why USB-C?

The benefits of switching a device to a USB-C from a lightning port are faster transfer speeds and easier access to a wide variety of peripherals such as wireless mice and keyboards.

With USB-C, Apple users would also be able to easily connect their devices to external displays such as Apple’s Studio Display.

Is the iPhone next?

To date, the tech giant has transitioned several of its devices to USB-C, including the iPad Pro, MacBook Pro, and MacBook Air.

Now, experts think that the iPhone might be next.

Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo predicted last month that the company may be internally testing an iPhone design featuring a USB-C connector.

“My latest survey indicates that 2H23 new iPhone will abandon Lightning port and switch to USB-C port,” Kuo said.

“USB-C could improve iPhone’s transfer and charging speed in hardware designs, but the final spec details still depend on iOS support.”

“It’s expected to see existing USB-C-related suppliers of Apple’s ecosystem (e.g., IC controller, connector) become the market’s focus in the next 1-2 years, thanks to vast orders from iPhones and accessories’ adoption of USB-C ports.”

Should Apple follow through with this decision, the change wouldn’t happen before next year.

That timeline means that we may see a USB-C charger for the iPhone 15 in September 2023.

Not everyone is a believer

Many iPhone users don’t think that Apple will move iPhone over to USB-C in the future.

“It’s hard to believe that Apple would switch from lightning to bigger USB-C port, honestly. I would have bet that Apple would directly go to full wireless. (And eventually USB-C for lower-end/thicker iPhones.),” one person wrote on Twitter.

“I hope I’m proven wrong, but I don’t see it happening,” another user remarked.
