Streaming has become one of the most common ways to indulge your inner couch potato.

According to Kantar, more than 6 million new video streaming subscriptions were purchased in the UK in the first lockdown in 2020 as there was little else to do.

But the costs can quickly rack up if you sign up to everything.

Still, there is a very easy way to save money if you know how.

Most of the major streaming service providers have free introductory offers you can take advantage of.

That means you can get access to the likes of Now TV and Prime Video absolutely free.

However, you’ll need to read the small print – or risk being charged once the deal period is over.

Usually you’ll have to enter payment details to get a free trial, and will be rolled on to a standard subscription once the introductory offer ends.

According to MoneySavingExpert, the best thing to do is set a reminder or make a note in your calendar before the deal is up and cancel the subscription.

Here we run through how you can get streaming subscriptions for free.

Prime

Amazon‘s Prime Video service is part of the online retailer’s Amazon Prime subscription.

Usually this will cost you £7.99 a month – or £79 if you pay for a year upfront, equivalent to £6.58 a month.

But you can get a 30 day trial for free, getting you access to top movies including Parasite and Joker, and popular series such as Parks and Recreation and The Walking Dead.

Britbox

Britbox is all about British box sets, and gives you access to the likes of Broadchurch and Downton Abbey.

Usually it costs £5.99 a month, but you can get a 30 day free trial.

If you do like it though, Britbox was offering a deal with membership at £2.99 for three months when we checked.

It’s also worth noting that you might be able to get access to some of these shows for free anyway through services such as iPlayer and All 4.

Now

Now’s trial period is shorter at just seven days, so save it for when you know you’re going to be home for a week.

It’s got a bunch of blockbusters including Harry Potter, Paddington, Jurassic World and The Wolf of Wall Street.

Now works by letting you pick the bundles you want, including entertainment, cinema or sport.

You can get a seven day free trial and then membership is usually £19.98 a month if you want entertainment, cinema and boost.

When we checked, there was a deal offering the bundle for £11.98 a month for three months if you do decide to stick with it.

Apple TV

Viewers can also try Apple TV for seven days before committing to a subscription.

It’s service has series including The Morning Show, Invasion and Little America.

The service is usually £4.99 a month but you can get a free trial for a week.

You can also get three months for free if you buy an eligible Apple device – but this is not going to be worth it unless you already need the gadget.

With any free trial, it’s important to read the terms and conditions to make sure you don’t end up paying through the nose for something you don’t want.

Research earlier this year found that millions of people could save as much as £500 by cancelling subscriptions they signed up to in lockdown but no longer use.

Something everyone should do at least once a year is go through their bank statements to make sure they’re not paying for memberships and subscriptions they’d forgotten about.

One money saving expert reckons you could save up to £7,600 over a year by making changes such as cancelling your gym membership.

And if you’re a customer of companies like Sky or Virgin Media, it’s worth trying to haggle to get your monthly costs down.
