GOT a new phone or tablet? Don’t bin your old one – it could harm the environment . Don’t stash it away and forget it either.

Instead, trade it in for cash or a gift card and at the same time get it recycled. Here’s how to do it . . .

RECYCLE: Try these three price comparison sites to find the best offer: Sell My Mobile, Compare and Recycle and Compare My Mobile. This week the top price for a working iPhone 8 64GB in good condition was £110 from webuyanyphone.com, found by Compare and Recycle. Also, try CEX, Mazuma Mobile and Envirofone. You’ll need to post it off.

GET TRADING: Various retailers offer trade-ins in exchange for credit, which might help if you can’t get much cash for your old one. An iPhone 8 in good condition will bring £70 credit at Apple’s trade-in site, there’s £80 credit at Currys, £80 from Carphone Warehouse and £110 credit with Amazon. It’s handier to exchange in a store like Currys rather than faff with postage.

DROP IT OFF: Find your nearest ecoATM. This kiosk service will examine your phone, give you a price and pay into your bank account in less than 90 minutes. Find your nearest one online.

SELL! SELL! SELL!: You can sell your old gadgets privately on eBay. Use the quotes given to you on recycling sites as a guide and see if you can get more.
But first, see if it’s worth the hassle of listing it, paying selling fees, packaging up and posting.

DON’T WAIT: How much you get depends on the device’s age and condition. Sooner you sell, the more you’ll get.

KEY TIP: Unlocked phones are worth more. See if your phone needs unlocking by inserting a SIM card from another network into your phone. If locked, a message will appear on the screen. To unlock, ring your provider and ask for a Network Unlock Code (NUC).

HSBC bank app users have been warned to check their transfers after some nearly transferred thousands of pounds by mistake.

Previously users entered the amount in pence but now they need to use a decimal point to indicate pounds AND pence.

So instead of entering 17016 for £170.16, under the new system it would be processed as £17,016.
