SHOPPERS can get up to £10 off their purchases with free Nectar card points through its app.
The loyalty trick was revealed by Martin Lewis in his latest MoneySavingExpert newsletter.
A Nectar card lets you earn points on shopping with brands such as Sainsbury’s, Argos Esso, eBay, Café Nero and Vue but it also offers exclusive offers and discounts through its app.
The points are worth different amounts depending on which retailer you collect them from and spend them.
Usually, customers collect one loyalty point for every £1 at Sainsbury’s, which is worth 0.5p when you redeem it in store.
But the points scheme is running a “Juicy Points Boost” offer for all existing members, which sees shoppers bag up to £10 worth of free points through its app.
Supermarket loyalty schemes – which has one?
MOST UK supermarkets have loyalty schemes so customers can build up points and save money while they shop.
Here we round up what saving programmes you’ll find at the big brands.
- Iceland: Unlike other stores, you don’t collect points with the Iceland Bonus Card. Instead, you load it up with money and Iceland will give you £1 for every £20 you save.
- Morrisons: Morrisons’ More gives customers five points per £1 spent in store. When customers earn 5,000 points they receive a £5 voucher.
- Sainsbury’s: While Sainsbury’s doesn’t have a personal scheme, it does own the Nectar card which can also be used in Argos, eBay and other shops. You need 200 Nectar points to save up £1 to spend on your card. You need to spend at least £1 to get one Nectar point.
- Tesco: Tesco Clubcard has over 17million members in the UK alone. You use it each time you shop and build up points that can be turned into vouchers – 150 points gets you a £1.50 voucher. Here you need to spend £1 in Tesco to get one point.
- Waitrose: myWaitrose also doesn’t allow you to collect points but instead you’ll get access to free hot drinks, and discounts off certain brands in store.
Each customers will be given between 100 and 2,000 free bonus points, which is equal to between 50p and £10 off your next shop.
How many points you get varies by customer and you’ll need to check the app to find out what you’ve been offered and to claim them.
New members will also see an extra 250 points – worth £1.25 – added to their accounts when they sign up, on top of the bonus points boost.
In his newsletter, Martin wrote: “A few of us on the team tried it and we got 250 points, £1.25 at Sainsbury’s, 400 points or £2, 700 points (£3.50) and 1,200 points (£6).”
The Juicy Points Boost offer ends Tuesday March 9, while the new sign-ups offer is ongoing.
How to claim the Nectar points boost
To claim the bonus points, users will need to download the app and login to claim your bonus points.
There will be an image which says “grab your juicy points boost.”
Tap this and it will display how many free bonus points you are entitled to and automatically add them to your account.
The points can then be used for your Sainsbury’s shopping or to take advantage of offers from Argos, Cafe Nero and Sky.
Usually you’ll get one point per pound spent but sometimes partners will offer better deals where you can collect even more.
The points can then be redeemed, either to be spent in Sainsbury’s or to be exchanged for vouchers or rewards to spend elsewhere.
Nectar said the average shopper gets 1,250 bonus points over 12 weeks by saving their Sainsbury’s offers before they do their shopping.
