GOING TRADITIONAL: For a basic set of crackers with a hat, gift and motto, try Wilko or Poundland, £3 for six.

Just 50p a cracker is the best value you will get ahead of the sales.

If you are not bothered about getting a particular type of cracker, nab a set on Christmas Eve when many will be heavily discounted in the shops.

FEELING CRAFTY: Sainsbury’s sells “make your own” cracker sets, comprising six flat cases, hats and jokes, for £2.50. You could slip in a sweet or other gift to surprise your family.
