How long do electric car batteries last?
The lifespan of an electric car varies from brand to brand.
However most manufacturers have a five to eight-year warranty on their battery.
But the current prediction is that an electric car battery will last from 10 – 20 years before they need to be replaced.
You can extend the lifespan of most EV batteries by keeping them charged between 50 per cent and 80 per cent as much as possible.
How long it takes to charge an electric car also depends on the size of the battery and the speed of the charging point.
It could take anything from 30 minutes to 12 hours depending on these factors.
A typical car with a 6kWh battery takes roughly 8 hours to charge fully with a 7kW charging point.
Most electric cars can travel roughly 150 miles on a single full charge.
However some, like Teslas can go about 350 miles on one charge.
Tips to keep your battery healthy
Keep your car at an average temperature.
Extreme hot or cold temperatures can affect the battery’s lifespan.
Avoid fast chargers
A slow change will always be better for your car in the long run.
Don’t rush
Avoid charging your car straight after a long drive.
Instead give the batteries chance to cool down first.
How much does it cost to replace an electric car battery?
Many manufacturers are offering electric car battery warranties
Nissan and Toyota, offer an eight-year – or 100,000 miles – warranty on their electric car batteries.
Without a warranty batteries can be very pricey.
Nissan charges £4920 for a new battery pack.
However, they have started selling refurbished pack which can be significantly cheaper.
