INSTAGRAM is a great way to keep your followers updated with your latest content, and users often like to include links to their current work or activities.

The photo-sharing app allows people to post real-time stories which can be a snapshot of the content you have created – with a link diverting followers directly to it.

How do I add a link to my Instagram story?

Some Instagram users instruct the viewer to “check out the link in my bio”.

But adding a “swipe up” link directly into your story is a much more effective way of diverting social media followers to the link you want them to see, and driving traffic to your brand’s website.

Whether it’s your latest blog update, a new item for sale in your shop or simply a news story you think your followers would be interested in, it could not be simpler.

1. Tap the ‘Create’ icon.

This is a plus sign in the top right corner of your Instagram profile.

You will see a number of options for what type of post you want to create. Choose story.

If you have more than 10,000 followers or are verified with a blue tick, Instagram will allow you to add links to your Stories to promote your brand

2. Choose your content.

Once you have opened the story, you have the option to take a photo, video or Boomerang from there.

You can also upload a photograph from your camera roll. You can do this by clicking on the small square in the bottom left corner which has a photo in it.

It will give you the option of choosing a photo taken in the last 24 hours, but you can click on the drop down arrow and choose any photo from your camera roll.

3. Add ‘Swipe Up’.

Click on the chain-link icon, which should be at the top of your screen – it looks a bit like a paperclip.

When you tap the icon, a new window will pop-up where you can input the URL you want to direct your followers to.

When this has been linked, you will be taken back to the story you’ve just created and the chain icon will be highlighted.

4. Add a ‘Call to Action’.

The story will now have a see more sign at the bottom, but some people will still not be directed to it.

Before adding the story to your profile for all your followers to see, make sure you edit your story and encourage your followers to swipe up to go to the link.

Add words by clicking the text icon in the top right corner – this is two As together that appears as Aa on the screen.

Then type in your command. Most people use the phrase “Swipe up” as that is literally what your followers have to do to see the content.

5. Share the story

When your masterpiece is complete, click send in the bottom right corner then choose Your Story from the next page and press share.

Alternatively, simply tap Your Story in the bottom left corner.

You can save stories with swipe up links in the highlights section on your profile, meaning they will stay pinned between your bio and photo grid for people to see at any time.

You can use highlights as a library for evergreen content such as frequently asked questions, featured blog posts or best-selling products.

It is important to note that not everyone can do this – the Swipe Up feature is only available to those users with more than 10,000 followers, or content creators who have been verified with a blue tick.

However, you can still add a link to your story by sharing your own or somebody else’s feed posts.

This can be done by pressing the arrow icon on the right-hand side of a photo, and pressing Add Post to Your Story.

Once on your stories, followers can click on it and it will direct them to the original post – which will give them more info than what would fit into stories.
