Holidaymakers are flooding into southern Europe despite ongoing travel chaos, according to Hostelworld.

The hostel, hotel and bed and breakfast platform said bookings in southern Europe were back above pre-pandemic levels in the six months to June 30.

Hostelworld also said visits across the whole of Europe from the US and Canada are back above pre-Covid levels.

The influx of North American tourists and southern Europe’s booming popularity helped the company bounce back from Covid.

Overall bookings hit 80pc of pre-pandemic levels in the first half of the year.

And after accounting for higher booking values, revenue was 4 per cent up on the same period in 2019.

Gary Morrison, chief executive of Hostelworld – which works across 180 countries – said the travel market is returning despite recent disruption.
