HMRC has launched a consultation aimed at tackling misleading advertisements for tax claim firms
HMRC is to clamp down on ‘unscrupulous’ tax-refund firms that charge hefty fees to help customers claim simple rebates, such as marriage allowance — which people can do themselves for free.
Money Mail has previously revealed how ‘tax agents’ are pocketing up to 48 per cent of payouts in fees. Some customers also end up locked into contracts that allow the companies to claim on their behalf for up to four years.
HM Revenue & Customs has launched a consultation aimed at tackling misleading ads and unclear terms. Firms may have to register with HMRC, and contracts that prevent the taxman sending refunds direct to clients will also be scrutinised.
But Sarah Coles, of Hargreaves Lansdown, adds: ‘It is disappointing HMRC is not worried about the high fees.’
Jonathan Athow, at HMRC, says: ‘We want to ensure taxpayers receive their full tax claims — and not be taken in by the unscrupulous practices of some repayment agents.’
