Two in three UK holidaymakers could lose hundreds of pounds in hidden fees while abroad this summer, research has revealed.
Holidaymakers are charged up to three per cent on debit and credit card transactions and on ATM withdrawals made abroad.
For example, if you spent 10 euros (£8.67) on a glass of wine, you may be charged £9.93. According to travel debit card company Currensea, a family of four on a week’s holiday in France may face up to £212 in hidden costs after spending on shopping, eating out and accommodation.

James Lynn, of Currensea, says: ‘Securing value on your exchange rate should be as much of a priority as getting a great deal on flights and accommodation. We found that more than half of families leave sorting out holiday money to the last minute.
‘People could save a small fortune by choosing cost-effective debit card alternatives.’
Fee-free options including debit cards are available from Chase, Starling Bank and First Direct. The Chase debit card offers 1 per cent cashback on most spending for at least a year.
The Barclays Rewards credit card has no transaction fees abroad and 0.25 per cent cashback.
