BOTTLES of Heinz tomato ketchup are to be produced in Britain for the first time this century.

The tea-time favourite will soon be made at Europe’s biggest food processing plant at Kitt Green, Wigan.

It follows US food giant Kraft Heinz’s decision to pump £140million into upgrading equipment at the site over the next four years.

The investment — said to be one of the biggest in UK manufacturing since Brexit — will create about 50 full-time jobs.

Kitt Green site director Luis Spinardi said: “We’re excited to be expanding our product mix by bringing sauces back to the UK.”

Only sachets of the ketchup, a 19th-century US invention, have been made in Britain since mass production was moved from Kitt Green in 1999.

Most bottles now sold in the UK comes from the Netherlands.

UK investment minister Gerry Grimstone said: “This investment is a vote of confidence in the UK economy.”
