Seven per cent say they have axed trips to see their elderly relatives as they struggle with the cost of living crisis.

And more than 12 per cent of car owners have stopped driving to work due to high petrol prices.

That figure rises to 20 per cent for those aged 18 to 24.

Some families stopped doing the school run by car before the summer holidays and ten per cent of under-34s sold their car.

The figures come as the Lib Dems call for a fuel cost cut in rural areas, along with bringing down VAT to 17.5 per cent.

They claim the moves would help save a typical driver around £200 a year.

Howard Cox, the founder of FairFuelUK, said: “These needless high fuel taxes — and not policing fair pricing for petrol and diesel — are trashing businesses and everyday lives.”

Lib Dem Treasury spokesperson Sarah Olney added: “Soaring petrol prices are blowing a hole in the pockets of millions of families around the country.

“The Government has got to act.

“People can’t afford to drive to work, take their children to school or even visit elderly relatives because of these outrageous prices.

“It shows the whole country is simply grinding to a halt under the Conservatives.

“This has to be a wake-up call to Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak.

“They need to stop arguing and help people with this cost of living emergency.”
