GREGGS is axing a popular bakery treat from its stores this Easter – and shoppers will be fuming.

The countdown to Easter may have begun, but Greggs customers will be disappointed to hear that a fan favourite won’t be returning to menus.

The bakery chain will not be selling its popular hot cross buns this Easter.

A Greggs spokesperson said: “While Hot Cross Buns won’t be returning to our menu this Easter, keep an eye out for other Easter favourites that will be arriving in our shops soon.”

Christians traditionally give up something such as chocolate or sugar for the period until Easter.

They can then look forward to tucking into typical treats.

Beyond chocolate eggs, hot cross buns are a key feature of the Easter period.

Hot cross buns have featured on Greggs Easter menus in the past, but they were also missing from stores last year.

Shoppers could previously get a pack of four hot cross buns for just £1.

Greggs is yet to reveal its full menu for 2023, but in the past it has included chocolate bunny biscuits and crispy chocolate cornflake nests.

But this isn’t the only Easter item shoppers will notice is missing from shelves this year.

Mondelez, which owns Cadbury, has scrapped Dairy Milk Egg ‘n’ Spoon cartons.

The prodic product was made up of a purple egg box which contained four chocolate eggs wrapped in foil and set alongside two purple spoons.

They were first launched in the UK in 2013 and various iterations hit the shelves over the last decade.

If you’re still hankering after a Greggs hot cross bun, then there are supermarket alternatives you could try instead.

The Good Housekeeping Institute has published its annual Easter taste test ahead of the big day on April 9.

They put over 150 Easter treats from brands and supermarkets through their paces.

M&S’ Luxury Fruited Hot Cross Buns came out on top with a score of 86 points out of 100.

In second place came Iceland’s own hot cross buns with 80 points out of 100.

Meanwhile, we compared Easter eggs from Dairy Milk to Lindor with their equivalent chocolate bars to see which are the best value.

Plus, shoppers are rushing to the supermarket to buy Cadbury and Celebrations Easter eggs for £2.
