A 150-year-old jeweller is to close its doors for good within days in a move which leaves shoppers with ‘no reason’ to head to the high street.

Goodwins on Hope Street in Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent is to shut for the final time this weekend.

The store’s owner, Sue Goodwin, is launching a closing down sales on November 11 with all jewellery reduced by 50%.

The store dates back to 1874 and was first established by Sue’s great-grandfather, CEH Goodwin.

The business has occupied the same location and expanded through the decades, taking on the neighbouring premises to create a larger store, with its own workshop above.

Sue posted on the jeweller’s Facebook page last night and said: “I have decided that the time has come for me to retire.

“Closing the shop has not been a decision I have taken lightly. Goodwins has a long-lived 150-year history in the city, and I believe it is the oldest remaining shop in Hanley.

“We intend to go out with a bang as a way of saying farewell and thank you to all our lovely customers who have shopped with us over the years.

“So, we are having a sparkling closing-down sale, which will see all our beautiful jewellery reduced by 50%!

“This will give customers old and new a wonderful opportunity to invest in a piece of Goodwins jewellery and take home an amazing bargain in time for Christmas.

“To prepare for our closing down sale, we will be closed until Saturday.

“Then at 10am – the sale will commence! Sue.”

Fans of the store were quick to react to the news with one saying: “So sad, the only decent jewellers around!

“I had my engagement ring when your father was alive and the shop had been burgled.

“He’d been in hospital and gave me a discount for being a nurse! Enjoy your retirement.”

Another said: “I chose my lovely engagement ring almost 39 years ago, and have bought several lovely pieces since.”

“Will be sorry to see you close! It is a very special shop, with lots of happy memories for lots of people,” said a third regular.

Another much-loved jeweller is set to close its doors after 188 years in business.

G H Corlett Jewellers opened back in 1835 on the Isle of Man and has been run by the same family ever since.

The family-owned store will be pulling down the shutters for the final time on December 23.
