Without the proper care, plants can die in freezing temperatures, meaning you’ll have to buy new ones next year.

As well as saving plants, you can also put your garden to good use by generating compost and collecting rainwater.
Follow these steps to prepare your winter garden.
REAP A HEAP: All those fallen leaves can go in the compost heap, which will save you buying bags of it next year.
Making your own compost with a 220-litre bin could save you around £29 on buying compost from a garden centre, according to Homebase.

GET FIRED UP: A chiminea or firepit will dispose of your garden waste while keeping you warm.

PLANTS IN PERIL: Rescue any seasonal plants that won’t survive the winter, especially vulnerable perennials such as caladiums and dahlias.
Dig up the bulbs and save them to be replanted in the spring.
The Greenhouse People advises keeping them in a dark, cool space like a garage or shed.

FLOWER POT LUCK: Some summer plants, especially geraniums, can be transferred and potted indoors.
With the typical spend on house plants being £75 every few months, according to fertiliser firm Miracle-Gro, it will save you some cash, too.
Just make sure they get good light. Place a dish under the base of any outdoor pots with drainage holes to avoid damaging spills.

BUTT OUT: Water butts are a great way to collect all the rain we get in winter, which can be used on your garden and house plants.
The butts typically save 5,000 litres of water a year — which would save you around £15 if you’re a metered customer.
And it won’t cost a fortune to get started either.
Wickes sells a 210-litre water butt for £38. And Wilko has a 100-litre one for £17.50.
