THINK you’re getting maximum bang for your buck? Maybe think again.
You may assume prices at many retailers are set, but often you can haggle a discount.
With the shops set to reopen soon, there are sure to be fantastic deals and many companies after your custom. So here’s how to lock in the best price . . .
CHAT IT OUT: Who doesn’t love a cheeky discount code for your online shopping? If scouring the web isn’t getting you far, it may be worth hitting up the live web chat. Simply ask a few questions about the item you’re looking to buy and then ask if there are any discounts or better deals they can offer. Quite often you’ll be offered an incentive, similar to when you leave items in your online shopping basket and don’t check out.
FREEBIE THROW IN: If you’ve tried your best to lock in a lower price but the shop just won’t budge, you still might be able to secure yourself some extra freebies. This could be anything from free samples of beauty products, accessories like a camera bag or even a voucher for your next shop.
IT PAYS TO BE REGULAR: Yes, you may be out for the best deal but it doesn’t mean you’re taking advantage. Regular custom is important and many retailers, small and large, reward loyalty. Online stores frequently send extra discounts to those who shop often. In a store, if the staff know you as a friendly regular, it’ll be easier to barter as they don’t want to lose your loyalty. This also works well with little everyday things, such as asking for a free extra shot at your regular coffee shop.
KNOW THE DEALS: Don’t start haggling cold — make sure you know the prices and deals on offer from other retailers. That way, you can play rival brands off against each other and get better deals as they battle for your custom. Price comparison websites like pricerunner.com and idealo.com are really handy for seeing a product’s price across a number of shops.
