ARE you celebrating Secondhand September?

A recent study from Virgin Media O2 showed the secondhand stigma has all but disappeared, with nine in ten shoppers now buying old items.

Meanwhile eBay says sales of used goods have jumped 30 per cent on this time last year.

So, while we’re happy to have secondhand goodies at home, how can we make nearly new work in the workplace?

Figures from the World Economic Forum show the secondhand retail sector employs 32,000 people and makes a £331million pound profit for UK charities each year.

But imagine how much more we could raise if we adapted secondhand chic at work?

Here are Sun Jobs top tips to getting you started.

1. Vintage Furnishings

Retro furniture already graces top hotels, bars and restaurants, offering both style and substantial savings.

At prices at up to 80 per cent off new equivalents and no need to cut down trees, it’s a win for your work budget and the planet.

Search eBay for the biggest selection of old office furniture in the UK.

2. Refurbed Tech

UK consumers already save £2 billion a year buying secondhand tech and it offers the chance for small firms to get great gadgets at small prices.

A refurbished mobile phone can cut costs between £200 to £500 per handset, while secondhand laptops are discounted by an average of 50 per cent.

However, check warranties and security software to ensure your business is protected.

Check out backmarket.co.uk to compare prices.

3. Work Equipment

From forklift trucks to photocopiers, the secondhand work equipment market is booming.

Savvy companies realise buying an item which is used but still in good condition can save thousands on the original purchase price.

However, check the health and safety requirements before you start shopping at hse.gov.uk/work-equipment-machinery/second-hand-products.htm.

4. Workwear

We’re happy to buy second hand school uniforms, so if you wear a unform to work, can you save cash by plumping for pre-loved?

If you’re free to wear office attire, you’ll save hundreds of pounds picking up smart suits and shoes in charity shops.

Shop in the poshest area local to you for the smartest buys.

Don’t waste a second looking anywhere else. Here are Sun Job’s weekly pick of the most exciting new job vacancies.
