TIME to step it up. The arrival of summer means many of us are now getting back into a fitness routine.

Sales of smartwatches are surging, with latest figures showing them up more than double on this time last year, online electricals retailer AO.com reports.

But for me, it is about getting one for a smart price. Here are a few savvy ways to keep your spending, and steps, on track . . .

TECH IT OUT: One of the best-selling smartwatches on the market, the Huawei Watch Fit, in snazzy-looking mint green, will ensure you track your 10,000 steps while looking stylish. Handily, it also displays all of your notifications and messages and it is on offer at the moment at AO.com for £79, usually £89.

RUN WITH IT: The Garmin Forerunner 35 GPS running watch is a favourite with joggers because it has a GPS and a heart-rate monitor, and you can automatically upload your stats to review your progress. If you have become a runner during lockdown, this is definitely one for you and Wiggle.co.uk has it on sale for £87.99 — down from £129.99. I also really like the Huawei Band 3E fitness tracker from Argos.co.uk, for just £16.99.

BYE BRANDS: If you are on a budget, you need to look past the big brands. Usually, the lesser-known ones will offer you exactly what you need, for just a fraction of the price. Take the Gear Geek smartwatch, for example. It tracks your steps, activities and sleep and is on offer now at geargeek.co.uk for £26.99, down from £49.99.

SAVE: £23

CASH TRACK: Quidco is offering £55 cashback on an Apple watch and £27.50 cashback on a Samsung device. If you already have a smartwatch and want to upgrade, you can trade it in for money off your next one. O2 Recycle will give you around £30 for a Samsung Galaxy smartwatch.

SAVE: Up to £55

STEP APP: If a smartwatch is still a little out of your price range, why not track your steps via your phone? Most smartphones have a function in the Health section that is already downloaded on to the device. It might not be as accurate as a smartwatch or fitness tracker but will do the job and get you started.
