General Electric Co. said Larry Culp is immediately taking over the reins of the company’s jet-engine business, giving the CEO direct oversight of the sole division that will remain after the manufacturer’s breakup is complete in 2024.

Mr. Culp remains chairman and CEO of Boston-based GE, and is taking on the additional role of chief executive of GE Aviation. John Slattery, who was CEO of GE Aviation for less than two years, will serve as chief commercial officer of the business. The change comes the same week that GE closes out its second quarter.
