ENERGY bills will go up by another £1,000 this winter, the ScottishPower boss has warned.

Keith Anderson said the Treasury must cough up more bailout cash or condemn families to being forced to choose between heating or eating.

He said: “You require a sum of about £1,000 to start bringing bills back closer not to where they used to be but closer to where it’s realistic to expect people to be able to pay them.”

He called for targeted support for the most vulnerable customers.

The current plan to give families a £200 loan to help with energy bills this October will “barely touch the sides”, he said.

He added: “Our view is clearly now this £200 is not going to be anywhere near enough.

“This will take time to implement, and it will take time to agree on the exact format of it.

“That all needs to be debated, signed, sealed, delivered, designed and agreed by July to allow it to be implemented by October.”

The expected rise in inflation is expected to hit hard-up Brits’ wallets hard.
