AN ANNOUNCEMENT from one of the biggest companies in the gaming industry has led to outrage from developers and players alike.

Many have been outraged by the announcement, with many developers claiming they may delay or cancel future games, and even remove their current games from sale.

A game engine is a set of specialised software and tools that game developers use to create their games.

Outside of companies that use in-house game engines, there are two popular engines which most games use as the base – Unreal and Unity.

Unity is used by some of the most popular games in the world such as Among Us, Fall Guys, Pokémon Go and Genshin Impact.

However, Unity announced that it plans to add an ‘install fee’ where developers would have to pay 20 cents (16p)  every time someone instals the game.

This means two charges if a player deletes and reinstalls a game, and if they download the game on two separate devices.

It also includes charging the developer if the game is installed via subscription services like Game Pass, or if it was purchased at a discount or in bundles.

This would mean that many developers would lose money if they put their game on sale, in a bundle, or on services like Game Pass or PS Plus.

Many developers stated that their upcoming games would be delayed as the team moves the game to a new engine.

Others claimed that they would remove their Unity games from sale as soon as the change was enacted.

Unity has now apologised for the announcement and has said it is revising the idea.

However, developers who have listened to the new plans – which have not been officially announced – have said that they are not convinced by the planned adaptations.

The future of all of these Unity games still hangs in the balance as we wait to see if the company reverses the idea.
