THE PLAYSTATION 5 has been on the market for almost three years, and many gamers have been hoping for a revised version of the console.

Sony’s PlayStation consoles typically get revisions three or four years into their life, with every home and handheld console getting a revised version at some point before their successor was released.

Typically these are slimmed down consoles with a smaller footprint, though the PS4 did get a ‘Pro’ revision that gave the console more graphical power.

Fans have been clamouring for a smaller PS5 console since the console released in late 2020, since it’s a very large console that takes up a lot of space.

In an unexpected twist however, it seems like Xbox creator and PlayStation competitor Microsoft may have leaked the existence of a new slim PS5 console.

In a court document released during the ongoing trial between the United States FTC and Microsoft, Microsoft claimed that Sony is expected to release a PlayStation 5 Slim this year.

The document reads: “[Sony] is expected to release a PlayStation 5 Slim later this year at the same reduced price point [as the PS5 Digital]”.

The PS5 Digital currently retails for £389, or about £90 cheaper than the disc version of the console, which typically costs £479.

The PS5 Digital also doesn’t come with a disc drive, meaning owners of the console can’t buy physical games for the console, instead having to rely on downloaded digital copies.

If Microsoft is correct about its predictions of a PS5 Slim console, it could potentially provide all the features of the more expensive variant at the lower price of the all-digital variant.

It’s especially exciting for fans because Sony increased the price of PS5 consoles in August 2022, making the console £30 more expensive in most regions.

Rumours have swirled in recent months about a slimmer PS5 console, with some suggesting there could be a new type of console that has a detachable disc drive.

It’s possible that the base version of the new slim console won’t come with a disc drive at all, but will be able to be upgraded with the accessory at extra cost, explaining the lower price predicted by Microsoft.

The PS5 has also seemingly had a stealth price reduction in Europe, lending more to the theory that Sony is preparing to launch a new version of the console.
