MAJOR high street chains are preparing to close some of their stores for good next week.

Retailers have been feeling the pinch since the pandemic, while shoppers are cutting back on their spending due to soaring inflation.

When prices are going up it squeezes households incomes, meaning that people have less money to spend.

This is bad news for shops, restaurants and pubs.

High energy costs and a shift to online shopping are also taking their toll and many high street shops have struggled to keep going.

Some well-known retailers are shutting a handful of branches, while some have disappeared from the high street for good.

But it isn’t all doom and gloom some retailers, including Poundland and Superdrug, have announced plans to open dozens of new shops.

Below, we have listed all the stores closing this week – including Iceland and B&M.

B&M

B&M is closing one of its stores this month.

The retailer’s store in Burnden Retail Park, Bolton will close for good on Wednesday, May 24.

Shoppers will still be able to visit the store on nearby Manchester Road.

If the Bolton store is your closest B&M branch, then it might be worth popping down to see if there are any bargains to be found.

B&M often launches major discounts before closing down stores.

When its Newport shop closed in Wales back in February, it hosted a huge 75% off sale before departing.

But B&M is also set to open a new store next week after closing its branch in Bowers Retail Park, Widnes on May 17.

The new store will open at Widnes Trade Park on Wedneday, May 24.

B&M is also set to open another store in Fazakerley, Liverpool, on May 31.

It comes after the chain announced a string of openings last month.

Iceland

Iceland has already shut the doors on more than half a dozen shops this year, but more closures are on the way.

Several stores closed for good earlier this year, including branches in Bromsgrove, Basingstoke and Rhyl.

Plus, a further three stores in Newport, Berwick and Hexham closed on Saturday, April 22.

It comes as a number of big retailers look to close branches as they struggle with high energy costs and soaring inflation.

Iceland has now confirmed it will be closing two more stores this year – with one coming next week.

Shoppers in Flint, Wales, will lose their store on Saturday, May 27.

And the branch in Beccles, Suffolk, will shut for good on June 17.

This will bring the total number of Iceland closures this year to 11.

Lidl

Lidl, which has 950 sites, is closing or relocating a number of its supermarkets over the next couple of months.

Its store on Drayton Road, Mile Cross, closed on Sunday, April 30.

But Lidl is closing another two supermarkets next week.

Its shops on Sturry Road, Canterbury, and Forton Road in Gosport will both shut on Sunday, May 28.

They’re closing due to the poor condition of the building and bosses deeming them unfit for purpose.

All affected staff will be offered roles at alternative locations.

Lidl is also set to close its store in The Quadrant in Redditch town centre later this year after opening a replacement store on Battens Drive in June 2022 – although the closure date isn’t yet confirmed.

Fans of the discount chain will be pleased to know that Lidl does have plans to open hundreds of new stores across the UK.

The potential locations would be for high street, standalone, mixed use, or shopping centre stores.

Firejacks

Firejacks in Basildon will close its doors to customers on Saturday, May 27.

It comes after The Restaurant Group (TRG), which owns Firejacks and other brands including Frankie & Benny’s, said it was closing some of its loss-making restaurants by the end of the month.

This includes 18 branches of Frankie & Benny’s, four Chiquitos restaurants and one Firejacks.

A specific date for for when each branch will close has not yet been confirmed.
