AUTUMN is a washout at the moment – but I’m taking this opportunity to give my home a deep clean.
From rugs to curtains, here are some tips for sprucing up rarely cleaned items.

RUG LIFE: If you’re on TikTok, you may have seen this viral rug-cleaning hack. Pop your rug in the bath with some Zoflora and bicarbonate of soda, leave to soak for a few hours, drain and shower it until the water runs clear. Get a 120ml bottle of Zoflora at Morrisons for £1, it’s 30p cheaper than the same bottle at Tesco for £1.30.

CURTAIN CALL: Revive greying net curtains by soaking them in a tub of water with a denture tablet dissolved into it, then wash in the machine. Pro-Formula’s denture tablets are 80p at Tesco — a whole lot cheaper than Secure’s for £4.

GOT YOU COVERED: This tip comes courtesy of TV presenter Anthea Turner. Despite most manufacturers recommend-ing taking sofa covers to a dry cleaner, she revealed on Instagram earlier this year that she cleans hers on a wool setting in the washing machine. That’ll save you around £20.

KIP HOORAY: Bed mattresses can become stained over time, but I’ve spotted loads of clever hacks in Facebook cleaning groups. The suggestions range from making a paste out of Napisan Non Biological Stain Remover, £3 at Wilko, to spraying The Pink Stuff’s Oxi Stain Remover over marks. A kilo tub of the Pink Stuff Stain Remover is £2.49 at B&M.

SODA SO GOOD: Get rid of mildew stains on your shower curtain by adding laundry detergent and bicarbonate of soda to a machine wash. When you get to the rinse cycle, add in some distilled white vinegar. Tesco’s vinegar is just 40p, compared with Sarsons’ £1.10 buy.
