CUE the end of summer: Time to clean the barbie and put it away until next year.

Not keen? That’s no surprise. According to new research by cleaning specialist HG, we are the worst offenders in Europe for keeping barbecues clean.

But splashing out on pricey products to keep them like new isn’t always necessary.

From baking soda to the humble onion, use things already in the cupboard to make your grill sparkle . . .

Scrape off burnt food first — and make it easier to get it all off by heating the barbecue. This should ensure any stuck-on burnt bits come away from the grill easily. Use an onion over grill bars to get rid of anything else. Stab a fork into the onion and rub it over the bars. The water in the onion has a steam-cleaning effect.

Steam it further by using a tip from @QueenOfClean, who recommends using newspaper soaked in water.

Once the barbecue has cooled slightly, soak newspaper in water and place it on the grill, then close the lid. This should help to kick off the cleaning process.

Hot soapy water and a scrubbing brush is a great way to ensure it’s finally all off. Scrunched-up tin foil is also good for removing excess grease and grime.

Still got unsightly burnt bits?

Spray them with vinegar in the same way you would your bathroom taps and leave for five to ten minutes. This should take off the final bits. Baking soda can also be an excellent help.

Sprinkle, spray and leave. When you wipe it off, it will act like an exfoliator on the grill.

Soaking utensils and the grill in coffee granules with water is another way to avoid elbow grease. By soaking, you should be able to wipe them and they will sparkle again.

Wash out the main basin with hot soapy water again and wipe dry to avoid rust.

Ta-da! You are ready to pop it away until the sun comes back next year.
