A self-portrait by Mexican artist Frida Kahlo sold for $34.9 million at Sotheby’s on Tuesday, an auction record for any Latin American artist.

The 1949 painting, “Diego y yo,” hints at the tumult of her marriage to artist Diego Rivera in part because she added a tiny portrait of his face atop her forehead.
