A French building materials firm has been fined £690million for supporting Isis and the Al-Nusra Front.

Lafarge, part of the world’s biggest cement maker Holcim, pleaded guilty to ‘providing material support and resources’ to the jihadist terror groups.

The business paid Isis and ANF for permission to run a cement plant in Syria from 2013 to 2014.

A US court heard how the business funnelled more than £5m ‘in illicit payments’ to two of the world’s most notorious terrorist groups.

The payments occurred at a time when the organisations were ‘brutalising innocent civilians’ in Syria.

US Attorney Breon Peace for the Eastern District of New York said: ‘Lafarge made the unthinkable choice to put money into the hands of Isis, one of the world’s most barbaric terrorist organizations.’

Lafarge declined to comment.
