FOURTEEN supermarket stores will reopen under the Asda name this week and shoppers are thrilled.

The retailer has struck a deal to buy out 119 Co-op sites as it looks to expand the number of its convenience-format stores.

That includes 116 retail sites with attached petrol stations, plus three development sites.

So far it has opened a total of 11 Co-ops as Asda Express’s in all corners of the UK, including in Yorkshire, Scotland and Devon.

The chain has plans for a further 105 to open by March 2024, including 14 more from today.

Locations are opening in Manchester, Derbyshire and London.

The newly converted Asda sites will stock around 3,000 branded and own-label products, including milk, bread and lunch on the go.

As part of the take over around 2,300 workers currently employed by Co-op stores will transfer to Asda.

Some of Co-op stores have been launching closing down sales as they bid to say farewell to customers for the final time.

Shoppers have managed to pick up dozens of items including three bottles of cooking oil, five tins of coffee, cleaning products, pasta dishes and Ryvita for just £18.

Asda already had three standalone Express stores before acquiring the Co-op sites, in Sutton Coldfield, London (Tottenham Hale) and Calne.

Shoppers can buy a range of hot and cold takeaway food options from Asda and partner brands including Leon.

They also offer parcel collection, return services and a grocery delivery service through Uber Eats.

It isn’t the only supermarket moving into the convenience sector either.

Morrisons is in the process of closing hundreds of McColl’s stores and reopening them as mini Morrisons Daily sites.

These convenience stores stock a range of Morrisons own-brand and branded products, such as fresh fruit and veg, meat, bread and dairy.

The retailer has begun stocking items from its budget Savers range across its 500 convenience stores too.

Plus, Nisa is to open 400 new shops as part of its huge expansion plans.
