Whip up a dip with these budget recipes…

HANDY HOUMOUS: To make this starter, use the budgetbytes.com recipe as your guide.

It requires a tin of chickpeas, tahini, lemon juice, garlic and cumin — and will make about six servings.

Try the world food aisle in stores for the cheapest tahini, such as the Bodrum tahini, £2.50 per jar, and serve with toasted pitta, 55p, at Asda.

TOMAT-WOAH: Instead of buying a jar of salsa for your Mexican night, grab a tin of plum tomatoes instead.

Drain the juice (you could keep it aside for future bolognese or pasta sauce) and add the remaining pulp to a blender with a squeeze of lime, diced red onion and either fresh or dry chilli.

Blend and serve with a pack of Just Snax tortilla chips, 45p at Sainsbury’s.

DAAL-ICIOUS: Draw inspiration from a typical daal with a cheap curry dip that you could swap for your starter dish from the takeaway.

Blend a tin of lentils with a can of coconut milk, add some curry powder and/or spices such as garam masala, cumin or ground coriander to taste.

Add a Clay Bakery naan from Tesco (£1.60 for a two-pack) and the servings are huge. You can cut the bread into lots of dip-sized strips.

TUNA IN: Tuna paté is surprisingly simple to make. Head to Aldi for a tin of tuna costing 99p, a tub of cream cheese for 85p and a four-pack of wonky lemons priced at 50p and mix together in a bowl.

Then serve on slices of the bake-at-home baguettes, 55p for two.
Swap the tin of tuna for salmon or mackerel for something a bit different.
