And in many cases, you won’t be able to tell that it’s not previously used.

Here are our tips for snapping up these bargain items.

BIG SAVINGS: Refurbished gadgets and appliances have previous owners but have been fixed and professionally tested to make sure they work.

In some cases, the items come with cosmetic damage such as a scratch or mark on the exterior.

But this should be clearly stated as part of the description.

Buying refurbished means you could bag a top brand or model that you otherwise wouldn’t be able to afford.

For example, you can get hundreds of pounds off an Apple iPhone or a Smeg coffee machine.

GRADE BUYS: Most refurbished tech is graded in terms of how well it has been fixed up or looks.

You will pay most for items that are in pristine condition.

And you’ll get more money off if you’re willing to buy an item in good working order but with visible signs of wear and tear.

Many retailers have around four grades of refurbished items ranging, from excellent to fair signs of use.

WHERE TO SHOP: Currys, Apple, Appliances Direct, Envirofone, Amazon, GiffGaff, eBay and OnBuy are among the retailers that sell refurbished.

Just make sure you buy from an official merchant with a trusted online presence.

GET A GUARANTEE: Always buy a refurbished product that comes with a warranty or guarantee.

This means that if you buy a product that doesn’t work properly or breaks you will be protected.

For example, any refurbished product from eBay comes with a 12-month guarantee that covers any defect in functionality.
