TODAY we celebrate our mums and their wisdom . . . for as the old saying goes: “Mother knows best.”

We asked four finance experts to share the top money tips they picked up from their own mums.

Here is what they said.

Sarah Coles, finance analyst at Hargreaves Lansdown: “Mum taught me not to spend money just to make myself feel better. Work out what the problem is, then solve that instead.

“When you visit a posh area, pop into the charity shop, she said.

“You’ll often find designer clothes that cost less than buying low-quality labels brand-new.

“We treated jumble sales like Black Friday and got up at the crack of dawn for the best bargains. It was far more fun than trawling the high street.”

Charlotte Jessop, founder of looking afteryourpennies.com: “When I got my first job as an assistant at Currys at 16, Mum told me to ‘save half and it will last twice as long’, which helped me build up cash for uni.

“She also said, ‘Look after your pennies and the pounds will take care of themselves’. I loved that so much that it inspired the name of my business.”

Sarah Tucker, founder of broker The Mortgage Mum: “Track everything. I’d watch Mum on a weekend in her dressing gown doing the family’s accounts.

“There was always a sense of calm around her. She taught me to organise all my direct debits and categorise spending so I could budget for the year ahead.

“I also got in the habit of cross-checking what was on my credit card to ensure I recognised every transaction.”

Rachel Springall, finance expert at moneyfacts.co.uk: “Mum taught me to save little and often. She encouraged me to always plan for the unexpected.

“Now I have cash stashed away to cover emergencies. This has helped no end when appliances break.”
