AS Easter approaches, there are lots of smashing ways to enjoy your eggs – and not just the chocolate variety.
The traditional type — a staple in fry-ups and baking — are a great budget ingredient, despite the price of a dozen rising 10p since Christmas.

THE PRICE IS WHITE: Check the cost per box and per egg.
Buying bigger cartons or mixed-weight eggs is usually cheaper than buying a half-dozen box.

CRACK ON WITHOUT EGGS: If you’re baking and find you haven’t got any eggs, don’t bin your batter.
Grab a substitute instead.
Three tablespoons of mayonnaise can be used in place of one egg.
Experts at KitchenAid also suggest trying natural yoghurt, apple sauce, banana or buttermilk. Search “egg substitutes” in the Pinch of Help section at kitchenaid.com.

MAKE A MEAL OF IT: Eggs pack a healthy punch and are the perfect low-cost protein hit to include in your meals.
As well as the usual omelette or scrambled egg, look into making an egg curry or tasty baked eggs.
You could also rustle up frittatas, tortillas, quiches, Yorkshire puddings and toad in the hole.

LESS WASTE: Don’t bin your egg shells as they are calcium-rich so make a great garden fertiliser if you mix them with your soil.
Some people also think they can protect plants from snails, and slugs.
Blitz them to fine crumbs in a food processor and sprinkle around the base of your flowers and bushes.
You can also use scrunched-up shells to scrub hard-to-clean pots and pans.
