TRANSFORM outdoor space by upcycling old furniture.
If you’ve got any old tables, chairs, shelves or plant stands that you are thinking of chucking out, you could give them a new lease of life in your garden.
Or check on websites such as Nextdoor, Facebook Marketplace, Freecycle and Gumtree to see what your neighbours are giving away for free that you could repurpose.
Here’s how to transform indoor items into chic outdoor furnishings with a bit of sanding, sealing and elbow grease . . .
MATERIAL MATTERS: Some materials, such as wood, are more durable than others and will hold up better to the elements.
Before you start painting or staining, wipe down the item with a damp cloth to remove dirt.
Then sand it to remove deeper grime, or old paint.
This will help the new finish adhere properly.
Aim for 180-220 grit sand paper and rub vertically to avoid circular scratch marks.
PERFECT YOUR PRIMER: A primer helps the stain or paint adhere to the surface and ensure a smooth finish.

Use a multi- surface primer, instead of a metal or wood-specific one, such as the Rustins primer paint, £5.99, Amazon.co.uk, to save a bit extra.
For a truly professional finish, lightly rub with fine-grade sandpaper once the primer has dried.
FINISH UP: Choose from paint, stain or sealant for the final coat.
If you are unsure about which colour, pick up a GoodHome Garden Colours 50ml tester pot for £2 at B&Q.
Or, if you already know, Wilko has a range of Garden Colour exterior paints at £6 for a litre.
The paint works on wood, primed metal and stone as well as offering weather protection.
KEEP IT DRY: Once you have applied your final coat of paint or stain, it is important to let it dry completely before using the furniture.
Check the instructions on the product used but wait a minimum of 24 hours, as this will help ensure a durable and long-lasting finish.
