Here are some DIY swaps . . .

SNACK ATTACK: Dairylea Lunchables are a favourite but at around £1.60 per pack, which is £12.80 per week — and that’s just for one child!

Instead buy own-brand crackers such as Asda Cracker Bites, £1, a pack of Asda ham, £1.35 and Asda cheese slices for £2.65.

Portion out the crackers and cut the ham and cheese slices into squares.

Total cost is £5 — and that’s potentially enough for two weeks’ worth of lunchables, with some crackers left over for you.

GO-GHURTS: Frubes can be an easy way to fill up little ones.

A pack of 9 is £2.25 at Morrisons, but you can also make your own healthy ‘go-ghurts’ using just three ingredients.

Get the Brooklea Greek Style Yoghurt, £1.65 for 1kg, frozen berries, £1.99 per pack and add a couple of bananas, 18p each, all at Aldi.

Blend and funnel into the Bramble zip lock food pouches, £6.99 for 36 at amazon.co.uk.

Use all the ingredients to make a batch and freeze. Pop one in their lunchbox to thaw before break time.

A REAL SMOOTHIE: Switch out the usual pack of Innocent Smoothies in orange, mango and pineapple flavour, £7 per 10 pack at ocado.com and make your own.

Get a set of reusable smoothie pouches at amazon.co.uk for £4.99 and then grab Del Monte’s The Orange One frozen smoothie mix, £2.50 at Iceland.

Blend with milk and add a banana for sweetness if needed. Decant, freeze and keep reusing the pouches.

POP STAR: Propercorn Kids sweet popcorn is 85p per 12g bag, but you can make it yourself at home.

At Sainsbury’s, Island Sun popcorn kernels are currently 90p per 500g pack, and one tablespoon of kernels will make that 12g portion.

Pop your kernels in a pan or microwave, add a dusting of sugar from the cupboard and seal in sandwich bags.
