DREGS in a bottle of booze are too good to chuck – they have all sorts of often surprising uses around the home.

From freshening clothes and adding sparkle to your jewellery to boosting flowers and improving your cooking, the wonders never cease.

Sophie Trueman from food-saving app Too Good To Go says: “Alcohol has great properties that can be used in a multitude of ways.”

Here are just some . . .

THAT’S THE SPIRIT: You can freshen lightly worn togs with a spritz of vodka. Mix equal parts of high-proof vodka and water in a spray bottle.

Add a few drops of essential oil, like lavender or lemon, to create a pleasant smell. Give clothes a quick spritz to perk them up and save on washing costs at the same time.

GEM OF AN IDEA: Use a dash of gin to make your jewellery shine. The late Queen’s dresser, Angela Kelly, used the tipple to add sparkle to Her Maj’s diamonds.

If it’s good enough for royalty, we’ll give it a go. Use a mix of gin and water on a cotton pad to bring your necklaces, rings and so on back to life.

PETAL POWER: Many florists swear by adding a few drops of vodka and a teaspoon of sugar into a vase of water to keep flowers looking their best. It can tackle the bacteria on the stems that make blooms wilt.

Change the water every other day, adding a spoonful of vodka and sugar each time.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT: You can, of course, also use leftover alcohol in cooking. Red wine can be frozen in ice-cube trays to add richness to sauces and casseroles.

Vodka is a perfect match for tomatoes, onion, garlic, chilli and cream in a pasta dish. Rum can be used for rum-and-raisin bread and butter pudding, which also stops old loaves going to waste.

Christmas Baileys can be brought out again for Irish coffee or to pep up your hot chocolate after a winter walk.
