Faith Archer, personal finance journalist and blogger at muchmorewithless.co.uk, says: “Don’t lose sight of your pension as bills soar. Opting out of your work pension is like turning down a pay rise, because for every pound you put in, you will get free money added on top by your boss and the tax man.
“All those payments really add up over the years and help narrow the gender pension gap if you take time off to have kids or end up working part time.”
Hannah Cooney, a blogger who shares tips on her Instagram account @budget withme1, says: “Whenever I am tempted to buy something online, I leave the item in my basket and put the amount it costs into savings. I then wait 24 hours to reflect if I really need it or if I would rather save the money.
“I used to buy on impulse but now I take my time purchasing to break my shopping habit.”
Emma Bradley, blogger at mums savvysavings.com, says: “Having a self-imposed money ban can help you take control of your cash and only focus on your basic needs. This is a challenge but even a short-term idea like a no-spend weekend can highlight just how much money is frittered away.”
Nicola Richardson (YouTube channel The Frugal Cottage), says: “Turn your savings into some kind of game, no matter how small. There’s the penny challenge, for example, where you increase your savings by a penny each day.
“I love using trackers as a visual aid. Also, have a place in mind for your savings and what they are for.”
