HOT weather can make life very uncomfortable for cats and dogs.

But you don’t need to splash cash on extra gadgets to keep pets cool.

Here's how to keep your pets happy in the summer heat

Here are some cheap ideas on how to help your furry friends cope with the heat . . .

ICE ICE BABY: Having an icy treat to cool down is not just for us humans.

There are many ways to serve up a frozen snack for your pet.

For cats, you can mix boneless fish with a little water and freeze into ice cubes.

A tin of boneless salmon is £2.79 at Morrisons.

You could also cook some carrots and blend them to add to the mixture.

This idea from Battersea Dogs & Cats Home will make a bigger batch for less cash.

You can create ice pops for dogs using sardines with water.

A tin is 47p at Tesco. Pour the mixture into small paper cups and pop in the freezer.

When partially frozen you could add a meaty treat to create a stick. Asda sells a pack of buffalo-flavour sticks for 99p.

When completely set, peel off the paper cup and let your pup enjoy.

GO BANANAS: Instead of lollies, you could try creating doggy ice cream for your pooch.

Simply blend chunks of frozen banana with a big dollop of peanut butter — just make sure the peanut butter doesn’t contain xylitol, as this is a chemical compound that is toxic to dogs.

POOL PARTY: A shaded paddling pool is fun for dogs and will help keep them cool.

If you already have a shallow pool for kids, add a bit of old carpet or a bath mat on the bottom to stop dogs puncturing it with their claws.

Filling a plastic children’s sand pit with water instead of sand is a good option, too.

Or try the plastic Starplay wading pool, £13, from Argos.

WIPE OUT: Wiping your pet with a damp towel is a simple way to help cool them down if they are hot and bothered.
