Atiq Ahmed, jailed since 2019, was in police custody and taking questions from journalists when attackers struck

A former Indian MP convicted of kidnapping and facing murder and assault charges has been shot dead along with his brother in a brazen attack broadcast live on TV in northern India.

Atiq Ahmed – jailed since 2019 – and his brother Ashraf Ahmed were being taken handcuffed by police to a hospital in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, when three men targeted them from close range as they took questions from reporters.
