In the money: Emma Walmsley

Two of the UK’s top bosses have pocketed bumper payouts – despite the country being in the grip of a cost-of-living crisis.

BP’s chief executive Bernard Looney and Emma Walmsley, who heads GlaxoSmithKline, scooped a combined £18.5m for 2022.

Looney’s pay packet more than doubled to £10m last year.

He was paid a salary of £1.37m and an annual bonus of £2.37m, alongside shares worth £6m last year.

Looney, 53, was awarded a sum 120 per cent higher than the £4.5m he received in 2021 after BP posted annual profits of £23billion last month.

Walmsley, 53, boss of Britain’s biggest pharmaceutical company, pocketed a remuneration package of £8.5m, more than the £8.2m garnered the year before.

GSK awarded her a salary of £1.2m, slightly higher than the sum she was paid in 2021. She also pocketed a bonus of £3.1m, alongside a share award of £3.7m. It comes after a tough year for Walmsley as GSK spun off its consumer division into a new company called Haleon.
