WITH the weather finally warming up, it’s time to dust down the barbecue.

But if you drag yours out of the shed and find it is still caked in last year’s food, fear not.

You can give it a new lease of life with items you have round the house.

Use these tips to make light work of cleaning your barbecue. . .

FOIL: After you’ve washed your grill down with soap and water, screw up aluminium foil into a ball for a brilliant stand-in for a scrubber or barbecue brush.

KETCHUP: Got a bottle of tomato sauce to hand? It’s a barbecue, of course you have! Apply it to patches of rust and leave for a few minutes so it can get to work.

When you rinse it off, you’ll be left with a shiny grill.

BICARBONATE OF SODA: There’s pretty much nothing this kitchen essential can’t tackle. It’s brilliant for cutting through grime and grease.

Make a paste by mixing half a cup of soda with half a cup of water until it has a thick, gloopy consistency that can be brushed on to the grill grates. Let it sit working its magic for a few minutes.

Then use the foil ball to scrub off any meaty residue and then rinse with water.

ONION: After you’ve used your grill, put half an onion on the prongs of a long BBQ fork and rub it over the still-hot bars.

Once your barbecue has completely cooled, you’ll be able to wipe away the dirt more easily.

The water in the onion helps steam away food left on the grill, plus it has natural antibacterial powers.

VEGETABLE OIL: Before you use your grill, put a little oil on a piece of kitchen roll and rub it into the bars to stop food leaving a sticky mess.

Get into the habit of applying a little oil after each time you’ve cleaned the grill.

It will make things so much easier next time you sling on a sausage.
