But you can cut your shopping bill with some simple subs, swaps and tricks . . .

ROAST THOSE TOMATOES: Cherry, plum and vine tomatoes all taste great, but they cost more than basic varieties.

Instead, take cheaper tomatoes and slow roast in the oven on a low temperature to draw out an intense flavour.

Sainsbury’s own-brand tomatoes cost £1.19 for a 500g pack, while the store’s Cheriplum tomatoes cost £2 for only 250g.

PEC THIS OUT: Parmesan is a great ingredient to add flavour to pesto, pasta and salads, but you can shave the price by picking up Pecorino instead.

It has a similar taste and is just as great for all those dishes. Morrisons’ Parmesan is usually £3.25 (currently reduced to £3) but the Pecorino costs £2.75.

GO FOR GREEK: If you like Asda’s creme fraiche (£1.15) for pasta, natural yoghurt (85p) for raitas and sour cream for fajitas (£1.20), try swapping for Greek-style yoghurt, which works for all three.

A 1kg pot is £1.50.

SAVE: £1.70

EASY PEAS-Y: Nuts are a great source of protein but they can eat into your supermarket spend. Instead, try roasting chickpeas in the oven for a tasty savoury snack at a bargain price.

Aldi has a bag of mixed nuts for £1.69, but a tin of chickpeas is 30p.

SAVE: £1.39

YOU CAN AFFORD SALMON: Fresh salmon is delicious and a great source of omega vitamins.

However, a two-pack of Tesco’s Finest salmon fillets will cost you £4.50, but a can is £2.30.

You still get the vitamins, and a tin will still give you around 40g of protein.

Add to salads, make sarnies or pop into pasta dishes.
