MIX IT UP: A Warburtons medium white sliced loaf costs £1.25 at Asda, while the store’s White Bread Mix is 85p, which contains all the necessary ingredients for a bakery-fresh loaf.

If you want to experiment, Tesco has six different bread mixes, including oat-and- linseed or ciabatta, £1 each.

BREADY STEADY GO: If you eat a lot of loaves, Dunelm currently has a special-buy breadmaker for £55. If you use it regularly, it should soon pay for itself.

If you’ve got an air fryer, you can also whip up an easy loaf. Find an easy-to-follow recipe at airfryingfoodie.com.

ICE AND A SLICE: Having some frozen bread on stand-by will save you costly trips to the supermarket.

Frozen baguettes and rolls are handy for quick lunches or meals on-the-go. Asda’s Bake At Home stone-baked baguettes (two-pack) or pave rolls are £1.25 each, or buy two for £2.25.

Freezing a sliced loaf and only taking out slices when you need them will stop bread going to waste.

FLOUR POWER: Buying own-brand flour and yeast is the smart way to save. Allinson’s strong white bread flour (1.5kg) is £2.40 at Sainsbury’s, compared with the store’s own bread flour, £1.30 for the same size. Hovis fast-action yeast is £1.25 for six sachets, with Sainsbury’s own costing 90p for eight sachets.

FILL THE FAMILY, NOT THE BIN: Bread is one of the most wasted foods, with people throwing away 24million slices each day, says food waste organisation Too Good To Go.

Its website is packed with tips on how to eat more and throw away less.
