CREATING a relaxing indoor garden can be great fun – and you don’t need to spend a penny.

We fork out an average of £25.56 per month — that’s more than £300 a year — on house plants, according to online magazine horticulture.co.uk.

But it’s just as cheap and easy to make the most of the warm weather and propagate plants at home.

Here are some ways you can go green on a budget . . .

DIVIDE AND CONQUER: Gain new shoots by splitting up plants with multiple stems or roots such as begonias, spider plants or peace lilies.

To divide a plant, remove it from its pot and gently separate the roots. Every section should have at least one stem.

Put each portion in its own pot with a bit of soil, water it regularly and keep it in a light, warm place.

A CUT ABOVE: Take cuttings from healthy, well-established plants, especially herbs or succulents.

Simply snip off a piece of stem or leaf with at least two nodes (the little bumps where leaves grow) and root the cuttings in a container of water, before repotting a few days later when you spot a bit of growth.

KEEP IT GREEN: There’s no need to buy lots of new garden pots. Root through your recycling pile for old jars, bottles, and plastic cups to propagate your plants.

Yoghurt tubs also work very well. This is a great way to reduce waste and save money.

SHARING IS CARING: If your neighbour or friend has a plant you might like to have in your house, why not ask for a plant swap?

If they’re especially generous, they may be happy for you to take a cutting so you have your own new house plant.

BE PATIENT: Choose low-maintenance plants. If you’re on a tight budget, it’s best to choose ones that don’t require a lot of care — and focus on quality, not quantity.
