Humans have yet to step foot on Mars, but a futuristic dwelling on the Red Planet has just been sold.
Mars House, which is the world’s first digital NFT (non-fungible token) home, recently sold for more than $500,000.
The virtual structure was sent as a 3D file to the buyer’s Metaverse by the creator Kirsten Kim, who said she designed it during the coronavirus pandemic to ‘create a healing atmosphere using her Digital Zen philosophy.’
The Mars House comes furnished with items made from tempered glass and fabric and includes a dining, sitting and sleeping area, along with a flowing infinity pool.
The home appears to sit atop a mountain on the Red Planet, providing residents with stunning views of the Martian landscape.

NFTs, sometimes pronounced ‘nifties’, are similar to cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and Ethereum in that they live on blockchain networks – a decentralized, distributed ledger that records transactions of digital assets.
But unlike traditional cryptocurrencies, NFTs are non-fungible, meaning that one cannot be exchanged for another. The digital assets have collectors value, and can represent items including still images, GIFs, videos, music and more.
And Kim is getting in on the action with her NFT Mars House that sold for $514,557.79.
The buyer received 3D files to upload to their Metaverse, which is ‘a collective virtual shared space.’

Users can purchase plots of virtual land to construct digital businesses and homes.
‘I want this space to showcase my passion for Meditative Design, a new definition of avant garde luxury for the digital age, Kim shared in a statement.
‘I designed and created Mars House in May 2020, during the first wave of COVID-19 lockdowns.’
The artist said that she partnered with musician Jeff Schroeder of The Smashing Pumpkins to create a calming musical accompaniment.
Mars House is one large space enclosed in walls of clear glass.
Throughout the home are different areas, such as a place to eat, sit with company and sleep, all of which are partitioned off from each other for a little more privacy

A massive roof overhang tops the home, with the lighting fixtures on the inside to illuminate the home during the Martian evening hours.
Kim hopes the buyer projects the Mars home in their Earth-based on.
‘Everyone should install an LED wall in their house for NFT art,’ said the artist.
‘This is the future, and Mars House demonstrates the beauty of that possibility.”
