THE owners of three popular Google gadgets have been forced to bid “farewell”, as the trio stop working forever today.

The affected products are some of Google’s older security and camera devices, that have ultimately been replaced with the Nest Cam.

Last week, Google issued a “final reminder” that it would end support for Dropcam, Dropcam Pro and Nest Secure products on 8 April.

Customers were given roughly a year’s worth of notice.

And now the day has finally arrived.

From today onwards, users will no longer be able to connect either Dropcam products to the Nest app.

They will cease being able to record too.

While Nest Secure – which was only available in the US – will no longer be accessible in the Nest app.

Any data saved from them will be deleted, especially previous video recordings.

“We’ve reached out to impacted users through a series of email communications and in-app messages to help prepare for this transition, and to provide special offers based on eligibility,” Google wrote in its reminder.

Dropcam and Dropcam Pro

Google bought Nest for $3.2billion and Dropcam for $555million back in 2014.

The company’s Nest Cam was released as a replacement to Dropcam but older kit has continued to work.

Dropcam and Dropcam Pro customers must be aware that if they use a Nest Aware subscription, it will not be automatically cancelled.

If the Nest Aware subscription covers other devices in the home, it will continue to work with those devices.

Nest Secure

Eligible Nest Secure users across the pond have been emailed an offer for a free Self Setup System from ADT worth up to $485.

Or, eligible US can claim $200 for use in the Google Store.

Both offers must be redeemed before May 7th, 2024 by filling out this form.

‘Recipe for disaster’

“Farewell Nest Secure. I loved our time together,” one former customer wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

“I switched to a Eufy security system and it seems to do the job fine, but will never be quite like you.”

Another added: “Google makes me so uncomfortable with purchasing anything.

“Their apps and services and products are just easily thrown out and unsupported… bought a Samsung Monitor M8, and a day later, Google Meet was removed and discontinued. I’m so sick of this.”

Google has a track record of hauling gadgets to the tech graveyard long before customers are ready to say goodbye.

And the trend has consumers worried about investing in cloud-based gadgets that rely on a company to keep them operating behind the scenes.

“Reminder that buying into ANY hardware with cloud-based service is a recipe for disaster,” one X user warned, adding that it is “a great way of ending up with lots of fancy paperweights within three to seven years.”
