DREADING the return of school and having to make packed lunches again?
You can fill lunchboxes for less by using some neat tricks, with one mum reckoning she got hers down to 90p a day. Try these tips to cut the cost.

SHARE THE LOVE: I saw a lovely post recently on social media by a mum who was struggling with hardly any food left for kids’ lunches. She used a food-sharing app, such as To Good To Go, and was able to get lots of yellow-sticker items to feed her children. These apps can really help make ends meet.
MEAT TREAT: Cook a supermarket chicken at the weekend and use it to fill rolls, wraps and pasta salad. You can do the same with any roast joint but I find chicken goes further.
COOL IT DOWN: Freeze yoghurts or tubes of yoghurt and put them into the children’s lunchboxes to save on an ice pack. Making and freezing sarnies in advance is also safe and a clever way to save time.
WARM TO THIS: Use up leftover veg or hit the reduced aisle for some to make a pot of soup. Heat it up in the morning and add it to a flask. It will still be warm at lunchtime.
TURN TO JELLY: Jelly pots come in at around 60p per pot. But buy your own reusable moulds — £6 on Amazon — and use Asda’s own-brand strawberry jelly for 37p and you can make so much. You could chuck in fruit to make it more exciting. The moulds are also great to use as yoghurt pots.
REFILL IT: Buy energy drinks once — get Tesco’s isotonic sports drink for £1.26 — then refill with strong orange squash and freeze overnight. It will keep lunchboxes cool and it tastes almost the same.
AISLE BE BACK: Only buy fruit and veg from the end of aisle offers, such as Aldi’s Super Six or Lidl’s Pick Of The Week. This week, get Aldi’s easy peelers for 69p, down from 85p, while cucumber is 39p down from 43p. Cut and pop into portions and they will go even further.
